Valentine Traditions and Fun Facts

Although it is traditionally thought of as a day of Romantic Love, Valentine’s Day is celebrated by many people as a great day to express your love to many of the people in your life that you hold dear.

Our first memories of Valentine’s Day are the great school parties we had in Elementary School.  Days or weeks before the holiday we picked out what Valentine cards we wanted to give to all our classmates.  It seems that every year there are more and more styles and themes to pick from – popular cartoon characters, movie themes, animal themes and many, many others.  Making Valentines was always a favorite activity also – using red construction paper, crayons, glue and, of course, lacy paper doilies.

Valentine’s Day has been around for a very long time.  The oldest known surviving love poem is written on clay tablets and dated from 3500 BC!  Some of the earliest Valentine’s Day gifts were candies.  Even the pilgrims gave sugar confections to their affianced.  Sugar was not that easy to come by in those days, so it was a treasured gift.  Now days chocolates in heart shaped boxes are a very popular gift.

Other gifts besides candy or chocolate are always appreciated.  This beautiful “Chocolate Love” Valentine Quilted ornament would be an appreciated gift for just about anyone in your life that you want to let know that you love!  Lovely chocolate colored fabric covered with pink swirls and luscious red hearts is a great keepsake gift that is sure to please!
